It’s Friday, beloveds. I’m back with your weekly roundup of things to spark joy or give you just a little boost as we slowly but surely catapult into the weekend. I seriously considered making this Friday Five a tribute to Zonning (Zoe Kravitz + Channing Tatum) and Kravis (Kourtney Kardashian + Travis Barker) because these couples are the first time in recent history where I’ve felt invested in celebrity romances, mostly because they awaken something in my younger self. I’m going to spare you from that because it’s still early in my newsletter journey, and like in the fledgling period of an early relationship, I am still trying to be a Cool Girl™️ so you stay subscribed.
Speaking of subscribing, I’m still working up the confidence to self-promote consistently — in the meantime, I’d be thrilled if you shared Consumed with a friend who needs some joy and intently focused essays on food and culture.
Playlist: “Caucasian Bops” was an iconic playlist by Jaboukie Young-White that someone reported to Spotify because of its title. The playlist is back with an edited, safe-for-work name (see below) and it is truly an all-star line up. We’re talking “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver to Cascada’s haunting cover of “What Hurts The Most” — range, nostalgia, songs that take me to the picture frame aisle in a TJ Maxx. Enjoy.
Social Media Follow: My friend Liz started an account chronicling her fabulous life, her incredible style, and her delicious home cooking. She brings me great joy and perfect cocktail recipes.
Poem: An ode to friendship, by Noor Hindi. I love platonic love!!!
Recipe: Whipped Ricotta. Use this as a base for anything, I love to cover it in tomatoes with flaky salt and olive oil. Grab a cup + immersion blender or a blender/food processor, throw in 1/4 cup ricotta (for one person), 1-2 tbs olive oil, 2 tbs heavy cream and mix until the consistency is light and smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste and try not to eat the whole thing with a spoon.
Video: Lisa Stansfield at the Apollo. Remember “Been around the world and I, I, I… I can’t find my baby”? I used to sing that song like the love of my life — my teddy bear at the time — was missing, and thought Lisa was the most soulful woman in the world. And here she is, at The Apollo, where the crowd is known for being tough, and she is absolutely crushing it. Please try to watch and not smile or clap in unison. The cheers of ‘GO LISA, GO LISA, GO LISA’ all throughout give me the chills. When she hits that note at 2:49 and then has her dance break and is FEELING HERSELF? May we all be celebrated like this.
Been around the world and I-I-I- hope you have a good Friday,
Roya
wait I completely missed the caucasian bops thing from jaboukie but i'm actually cackling rn it's sooo good
Speaking of celeb romances...clicking on Jaboukie Young-White's tweet led me to realize that the Twittersphere is upset that Olivia Munn is pregnant with John Mulaney's child. And then I thought of their name and dubbed it Jonovia. Thank you for that. And Liz. And Lisa Stansfield at the Apollo! Happy Friday!
